Day Twenty Four of LOCKDOWN!

Today we began the first of our project days on the Vikings. This is something they have been very keen to do and have been asking us for weeks when we'll be studying them. They've come across the Vikings before from watching some of their favourite TV shows.

Reading a poster about the Vikings

We have a good Vikings book with lots of pullouts so we'll be dipping in and out of it during the project

It has a pop-up Viking longboat

Zachary did a comprehension with facts about the Vikings

Colouring a picture of a Minion dressed as a Viking!

All done!

Ptolemy was delighted to colour in some of his favourite superheroes (they overlap with Norse mythology); this is Loki

Colouring a longboat

Jory colouring in a Minion

We looked at the areas that the Vikings pillaged and conquered; Zachary was surprised to learn that Dublin and York were Viking settlements

We had a good run around in the garden (we try to use both front and back gardens to keep it more interesting!

What do you call those big metal structures that carry electricity?

Catch the guy with the ball

Making Norse berry and honey bread

Adding the fruit

BBC Bitesize have a great video series on Norse mythology stories

Helping the Vikings find their longboats

A Vikings themed reading exercise: matching the big and small versions of letters to make Viking longboats

It took a while but got easier towards the end

Our bread was baked (with some leakage due to overfilling)

Tasting the bread; they all loved it (except Jory who is incredible fussy, although he did eat a small bit)

Bringing some bread up for Daddy to try (who was working)

They built their own longboat to 'sail' in; it has a pink sail and Ptolemy holds the scary monster head at the front of the ship (they put this on because they believed it would ward off bad spirits and scare people)

Dressing up to go 'Viking' i.e. adventuring/pillaging; they actually called themselves the Norse

Scary Norseman

We forgot to photograph Tahlia's finished Easter basket, so here it is!
