Day Twenty Eight of LOCKDOWN!

Ptolemy loves playing with his superheroes

Batman joined in too

Zachary found some Vikings sections in his quiz book; they found it interesting that Vikings used turf on their roofs

Putting together a timeline of events relating to the Vikings

Tahlia added the final touches to her patchwork elephant

Zachary loves his simple Viking probability exercise

All finished and embellished with gemstones

We had a brief look at famous explorers (with a Viking slant; contrary to popular belief, the Viking, Leif Erikson is actually thought to be the first European to have set foot on continental North America); here, Tahlia sorts out what an explorer would need to take with him

Making a Viking shield

Ptolemy likes his new shield

Tahlia has a new device to hold her fingers in the correct position for writing

Zachary found an online Viking themed game to try

Playing an explorers themed dice game; although Tahlia likes to cheat

We learnt about Norse runes and made some gingerbread to make our own runes

As always, Zachary was in charge of the recipe

They have a favourite game they all play together, at least once a day. It's called the jail game and involves moving furniture and cushions, argh!

Runestones for our next activity. Zachary was particularly interested to learn that Bluetooth is named after a famous Viking king; the Bluetooth symbol is derived from the runes for his initials

You have arrived in Greenland after Erik the Red promised it was a wonderful place. Now the weather is against you and you must write a message to Thor for help. Find the rune stones to spell the message.

A treasure hunt for rune stones

Zachary spells out words using the runes

Carving runes into gingerbread 'stones'

Someone kept eating the dough!

Zachary spelt his name in runes

Ready for eating

Delicious!

Tahlia's colour by numbers, with some artistic licence

Ready for Bible and song time before bed
