Day Ninety Seven of LOCKDOWN!

Flag drawing

We continued with our Old Testament overview by looking at the Red Sea crossing in more detail...

We reenacted the crossing; here, Moses holds up his staff and the Red Sea begins to part

But Pharaoh's chariots are catching up with them!

The people of Israel must hurry across (they've swapped roles and now Jory holds the staff as Moses)

The parting of the Red Sea

Pharaoh's chariots didn't make it (we reenacted this several times, each playing different characters)

They also used their little people to act out the story on the Red Sea craft that they made yesterday

We learnt the 10 commandments, with a different action for each; this is 'Thou shalt not lie'

Holding up six fingers, then using the one finger to stab the rest; this is 'Thou shalt not kill'

We made an origami 'cootie catcher' to test ourselves on the 10 commandments; they were surprised to learn that the people of Israel were already breaking one of the commandments when Moses returned with the 10 commandments on the stone tablets
Opening it to find the answer

Even the littlest enjoyed looking at the numbers

The people of Israel made it through the Red Sea to safety, but then they grew hungry. We learnt about the manna that God left for them to collect (and later, quail):

And the house of Israel named it manna, and it was like a white coriander seed, and its taste was like a wafer of honey. Exodus 16:31

We had a go at making our own honey coriander manna bread...

Adding the honey

Worried we've forgotten something

We cheated a bit, but we wanted to try out the dough hook on our new stand mixer

We talked about the ark of the covenant (a special gold covered chest), then decorated our own with gold and gems

Telling us about the gems he put on

Next, we made the contents for the ark; firstly, the two tablets with God's inscription of the 10 commandments

They each did their own inscription on a side of the clay tablets

Next we had a taste of something similar to manna: wafers.

The remaining 'manna' we put into a golden cup and added to the ark

The last item to go in was Aaron's staff, which produced blossoms to show that Aaron's family should become priests

Our complete ark

Then it was time to carry the ark from place to place; Mummy and Daddy demonstrated using pool noodles

Then they all had a go, being careful not to touch the ark

Carefully carrying it through

It didn't stay up much longer!

They couldn't resist trying a sword fight

Kneading the dough after the first rise

We moved on to talk about the spies in Jericho and we built our own city of Jericho ready to act out the story; Jory was very pleased with it and kept the others away in case they knocked it down (if you know the story, you'll know what's coming...)

Like the people of Israel, they walked around the city seven times and on the seventh time blew their trumpets (which they had decorated earlier)

The city walls came tumbling down!

Jory was far from pleased

Zachary also enjoyed a game of Cocoa A Go Go

We enjoyed a tasty 'Israelite' tea of manna bread and quail (chicken legs)
